Learn About Korean Somaek
Welcome to our educational page where we delve into the world of Korean somaek traditions and culture. First, the word "somaek", is a combination of the words "soju" and "maekju" (beer), and it is a popular alcoholic beverage in South Korea that has gained international recognition for its unique drinking culture.
Not familiar with soju yet?
Soju is a clear colorless distilled alcohol made in Korea that is traditionally made from rice, but may also be made from barley or wheat. Originally unflavored and has a clean, mild flavor, but also comes in lots of flavors such as peach, plum, strawberry or mint-chocolate chip as just a few.
Soju is the fastest growing liquor in the world - with 100 million nine-liter cases sold in 2022, which out-sold even Smirnoff vodka.
According to Statista World Market Forecast, Soju sales in the U.S. in 2024 was $5.74B for home consumption (grocery and convenience sales) and $1.86B in bar and restaurant sales.
More and more liquor stores and grocery markets are carrying soju - if you can't find it in yours, best to ask at the counter where it is or if they can carry it - they are missing out, and so are you!
Somaek is not just a drink, but a social experience that brings people together to celebrate and enjoy each other's company. It is often enjoyed during festive occasions, gatherings with friends, or simply as a way to unwind after a long day.
So, what exactly is Somaek and how is it consumed? Somaek is a delightful blend of soju, a clear distilled liquor, and beer. The combination of these two beverages creates a refreshing and smooth taste that is loved by many.
To properly enjoy Somaek, follow these simple steps:
- Start by pouring a soju into a somaek glass up to the desired level line.
- Next, choose your favorite beer and pour it into the somaek glass up to the beer or maekju fill line. The type of beer can vary based on personal preference, but light and crisp beers are commonly used.
- Now comes the fun part! Take a chop stick and tap it down into the bottom of the glass in a firm swift move (but not so hard that it will break the glass!) This motion will cause a reaction between the soju and beer to bubble up and self-stir!
- Finally, raise your glass and say "geonbae" (cheers) before taking a sip of your Somaek. Enjoy the harmonious blend of flavors and the camaraderie it brings.
Drinking Somaek is not just about the act of consuming alcohol, but also about the cultural significance it holds. It represents the spirit of togetherness, friendship, and celebration.
In Korean culture, it is common to share Somaek with others as a gesture of goodwill and respect. It fosters a sense of community and strengthens bonds between individuals.
