소맥 Explained
You may have seen the word on a menu, heard it during a Korean drama or noticed it on one of our glasses. Somaek is a short name with two drinks—and a whole world of curiosity—behind it.
The short answer - Two Ingredients. One Connection.
Somaek (소맥) means a mixture of soju and beer. The name brings together the opening syllable of soju (소주) and the opening syllable of maekju (맥주), the Korean word for beer.
| Word | Korean | Meaning | Part used in somaek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soju | 소주 | The Korean alcoholic drink soju | 소 |
| Maekju | 맥주 | Beer | 맥 |
| Somaek | 소맥 | Soju mixed with beer | 소 + 맥 |
Once you recognize those pieces, the name becomes easy to remember: soju + maekju = somaek.
Somaek names the mixture, not a bottle
Soju is one ingredient. Beer is the other. Somaek is what you make when you combine them.
That distinction helps when reading a menu or planning a gathering. If someone offers soju, they may be offering the drink on its own. If they offer somaek, they are referring to the soju-and-beer mixture.

Does the name tell you the ratio?
No. “Somaek” tells you which drinks are combined, but it does not specify how much of each is in the glass.
Different proportions give you different balances. Large Somaek’s signature concept uses one part soju to three parts beer. The familiar 3:7 reference uses three parts soju to seven parts beer. They are different proportions, and both can be measured at smaller volumes.
Our soju-to-beer ratio guide explains the numbers with practical examples, including how to leave room for foam.

What does “Large Somaek” mean for our brand?
We took inspiration from the drink and the gatherings around it, then brought that idea into 16 oz glassware. The larger format gives you room for your chosen pour; the soju guide lines help you repeat the starting measurement you enjoy.
“Large” also expresses the way we think about the moment: space for a meal, conversation and the people at your table. It is an invitation to linger, without a requirement to fill the glass.
